donkey kong 3 monitor issues
Question from Peter: I have the Donkey Kong 3 arcade game and the monitor has a bright line vertically towards the left side of the screen and the screen is black and dead to the left of the bright line. (no picture in the left 1 ½ of the screen at all.) there are also vertical lines from the bright vertical line to the right side of the screen (consistently larger spacing as you go right). They don’t move (the spacing only gets larger as they go right.) any ideas what may cause this?? Any ideas what to check?? If it is the monitor where can I get a replacement or can this one be rebuild/fixed?? The game seems to work fine other then you can’t see anything on the left 1 ½ of the screen. I attached pictures trying to show.

As for your questions, your Donkey Kong 3 monitor sounds like it has some bad capacitor issues. We recommend installing a tradition cap kit on the monitor to see if it solves your problem. Traditional cap kits solve many different problems on Sanyo 20EZ monitors over other brands. It’s definitely a great first step on this monitor. Check out our post on Installing A Cap Kit for more information. If the issue continues, you might need a horizontal width kit as well. Check out this article from Bob Roberts on Horizontal Width Kits for more information. If you do not feel comfortable doing these repairs yourself you can always ship your monitor chassis off for repair. If you would rather go this route, we highly recommend Chad at arcadecup.com for all monitor repairs.
As for your Stargate, it sounds like it is resetting every so often. Resetting issues are usually indicative of a power supply problem. You can try checking and adjusting the power supply for the game to see if this helps. Check out our post on Checking A Classic Power Supply for more information. If you cannot get it adjusted properly, we would recommend replacing the power supply entirely with a new switching power supply. You can buy a conversion kit from arcadeshop.com for $39 plus shipping. This will greatly increase the reliability of your game.
