Measuring voltage on arcade board / power supply

Question from Jason: I just replaced an old power supply in my Raiden cabinet with an new adjustable one. I have a few questions…

To confirm it’s getting the correct voltage, where exactly should I be measuring it? I’ve read that some say you should test it at the board, and others say at the supply… I do get quite different results depending on where I measure.

With the game connected and powered:
At the power supply itself I get around 5.4v.
On the board traces next to the JAMMA connector I get around 4.7v.

These numbers may not be exact, since they’re from memory, but either way the voltage at the board was quite a bit lower than at the supply.

Which measurement is more accurate/important? Should I adjust the supply up to get the voltage at the board traces closer to 5v, or down to get the supply output closer to 5v? It seems like if I try to get the connections at the board up to 5v, I’d have to be fairly close to 6v on the power supply (which seems a bit high, to me)…

What is a good range for the 5v to avoid damaging the board? Are there symptoms to look for, to tell if the voltage is too high/low?

Should I also be checking the voltage at the JAMMA connector without the board connected?

Thanks.
Jason

Response from Tim: We always start at the power supply but also check it at the board. Its more important there at the board end because that’s where its needed.
Yes adjust it so that its closer to 5.0 at the board.
Try not to go beyond 5.1 if possible
It wont hurt to check it with the board disconnected because you can see then if something from your board is draining the power.
