Vertical Folding
Question from Damien: Hi guys,
Love the videos and the podcast. You inspired me to purchase a non-working cabinet (a dirt-cheap Neo-geo) that I had to break into since the owner said that he hadn’t seen the keys for 10 years. To my amazement, I got the board working just by doing the eraser trick on the JAMMA connector and the same trick fixed two of the cartridges that were lying inside the cabinet that had major graphical corruption when I first tried them so a big thanks for that little tip.
To my question….
I am also building a MAME cabinet that somebody else started. It has a Mitsubishi 29†tube with a Sharp Image chassis. It has an Arcade VGA that works perfectly however there appears to be some vertical “folding†at the top of the screen. I am able to get rid of it by tweaking the Arcade VGA’s screen modes but it doesn’t seem right to have to do this for every game and it is a major hassle. I have tried adjusting Vertical Hold, Vertical Position etc. on the chassis control board but to no avail.
Is there a control that I should look for on the chassis itself to help remove vertical folding or is it possible that a bad cap, pot etc. could cause this? Where should I look first?

First off, thanks for the kind words. We’re glad that we could help you out with your arcade issues. As for your question, vertical folding issues like what you are describing are usually indicative of bad caps. Probably best just to install an entire cap kit on the monitor unless you have an ESR meter that can test caps in circuit. Of course, if one cap is bad there’s a good chance that other caps on your chassis have failed or are close to failing. Try the cap kit and let us know if it fixes your issue.
