I don’t believe that the wrappers are necessary but they are nice to have as they identify the coil. I know that some of the pinball vendors we like to use (such as Planetary Pinball) sell pinball wrappers for some coils. There are even some websites that have images so you can print your own. I’ve heard several people say that they use shipping label paper in their laser printers to print wrappers. Of course, I think that using electrical tape would be an acceptable solution as well but just make sure you have some other way to identify the coil in case you need to replace it.
