Enduro Racer
Question from Jason: Hey there, super pumped to hear a new podcast this week and congrats on the new addition to your family. I do have a question about a Stand Up Sega Enduro Racer that I’m restoring. The audio is just a weird series of blips and an occasional motor sound. The service mode shows all chips as OK. I’ve removed, cleaned, and re seated “all” chips (there are a lot on this board)! I’ve checked all the caps on the board with an ESR meter and they appear in spec. I’ve even checked the Sega stereo amp in the bottom of the cab and its caps seem in spec also. By design the board only accepts +5 and ground so there is really only a few places to check power and that’s correct. There is also an issue of the sprites that compose the very background are kinda blocky and not correct, I could live with that if the audio worked correctly. Thanks for any insight! I’ll probably post this on Klov also to see what other folks think as well.

First off, thank you for listening to our podcasts and for the congratulations. As for your question, it sounds like you’re having some sort of board issue. You might try turning up the voltage up on your power supply to about 5.2 on the +5 VDC line and see if that makes a difference. I know that a lot of old Sega games are power hungry and sometimes need a little more voltage flowing through them to work properly.
Also, you might take the schematic and trace the power through your board to make sure that all of the chips are getting the right voltage as well. This will help you find a cold solder joints, bad sockets or other issues that might be affecting your board’s playability.
Unfortunately this issue is a real stumper. I’ll talk to some other guys and let you know if I find out any additional information.
