Kick
Question from Scott: I have bought all your dvds and they have been a great help learning and understanding arcade games and their repair.
I need a little assistance with my Kick upright game. When the power is switched on the monitor comes on with colors and I get a vertical line on the screen. This line goes from right to left constantly. The person I bought the game from thought the power supply to the PCB was bad and had purchased the power supply but not installed it. I have installed the power supply but it made no difference. It appears to me the board is not getting the necessary power, however the new power supply is working. There is one led on the board but it does not light up. Punching the reset buttons makes no difference. It doesn’t respond to test mode either. I’m certain the problem is with the PCB since the monitor comes on and seems to work. I have checked all side connections, connectors and wires and found no problems. Any suggestions on where I need to start checking the board?
Thanks for your time,
Scott

Response from Jonathan: Scott,
If you suspect that the board is not getting power, you might try checking the voltages at the harness (i.e. where the board connects to the cabinet wiring). In order to do this, you will need the pinouts and/or manual for the game. Here’s a link I found to what I believe is the manual for your game: http://gamesdbase.com/Media/SYSTEM/Arcade//Manual/formated/Kickman_-_1981_-_Midway_Games.pdf. It looks like the manual also has a maintenance and repair section that might give you some good ideas on how to repair your game.
Getting back to checking the voltages, turn off the game and remove the harness from the game circuit board. Turn the game back on and check the voltages at the harness using your multimeter and the pinouts from the manual. If the voltages getting to the board are correct, then you’re probably having some sort of board issue. Otherwise, you are having a power supply issue and probably need to either replace or rebuild the current power supply. Feel free to contact us again if you need help with the process or get stuck at one of the steps along the way.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
