Video Games and Music don’t alway mix.
Question from Ryan: Hey there Jonathan and Tim, I recently went from a few video arcade games and 1 pinball to 9 video games and 2 pinballs in the last 2 weeks. The Street Fighter II CE (in a dedicated cabinet) that I just bought had a cold solder joint and some blurring on the monitor. Everything was slightly out of focus and the colors were over-saturated and then the picture would fade in and out with cabinet vibration. I pulled the monitor, but didn’t have a cap kit to redo the caps, I just wanted to repair the cracked solder and see what it corrected. I got it back in, turned on the power and the brightness was great and the picture was solid. It was still out of focus, so the next step is a Bob Roberts cap kit, and hopefully its not the flyback. I’ve adjusted the flyback focus knob and its still not corrected. The funny part of the story is that I got the machine put back together and shoved it back against the wall. I turned it back on and all the colors were washed out of it! It looked horrible and everything was kind of in a slightly colored grayscale. I couldn’t figure out what was going on, but shortly thereafter I realized I’d crammed it right next to 2 of my tube guitar amplifiers, both with two 12-inch speakers in them. I pulled the amps away and the color immediately came back, but is now in need of a good degaussing. I couldn’t believe that such a thing could happen. The amps were on the floor and neither were turned on, but just the strong magnetic pull from the speakers was enough to jar the monitor something fierce. Just a word of warning to any fellow musician/arcade enthusiasts. I’m sure some tower audio speakers or surround sound components might cause the same problems. Love the show.
