Arcade game repair
Question from Doug: Hello, my name is Doug and I own a small roller skating rink in Illinois. I have video games in my place and I’m having trouble with a couple. First, I have an 18 Wheeler sit down that is playing blind. I watched your video and was going to attempt the repair myself but now I’m having second thoughts. Game has power and plays blind. The Monitor board has power, fuses checked out but no neck glow. So now I don’t know where to proceed. I don’t know how to determine location of the H.O.T. to check it out. I don’t know if it needs a cap kit or flyback. I have no clue where to buy them either. It has a Toshiba monitor and I have the board out. What would it cost me to ship it to you for repair? I have no one locally to do this. Should I try a TV repair shop? My 2nd game is a Cruisin USA. It works whenever it wants to. Once it does come on, I always have to reset the pricing and calibrate controls. Is this a battery issue on the board? Can you help??? Thanks, Doug

Response from Jonathan: Doug,
On your 18 Wheeler Sit Down cabinet, if you’re not getting neck glow then you’re probably having an issue somewhere in the high voltage section of your monitor chassis. This could be the HOT or flyback as you mentioned but it could also be a cold or cracked solder joint on the high voltage line. As you may know, we have a post and video on Troubleshooting Games That Are Playing Blind that should help you out with this issue. If you need additional help, you might consider purchasing our Volume 4 DVD that has an extended cut of the Troubleshooting Games That Are Playing Blind video that shows all of the steps and is 3 times as long as the online version.
Of course, you might want to try a TV repair shop or another avenue if you don’t feel comfortable doing a repair like this yourself. Also, there are several people in Illinois that can help you as well. The guys as Galloping Ghosts arcade actually host classes you can take on arcade repair to help you get familiar with it. You might contact them to see if they can help you out.
On your Cruisin USA, this does sound like a battery issue. I believe there is a lithium battery on the board that’s responsible for holding the settings. Just replace the battery, reset the settings one more time and you should be good to go.
