Centipede playing blind please help!!!!!

Question from Scott: Hello, I have been watching your how to videos and just have a question. My game does have the G07 monitor.  There’s no neck glow, it has 124 volts at the two wire power plug, all fuses are testing good. The game plays and has sound. So is there a way to test the hot, the flyback, and the regulator to see if there bad? Thanks a million for taking the time to do your videos its been very helpful. I grew up in the late 70’s an 80’s an miss the arcades. I got a job working at a nickel city arcade when I was in high school and had a ball. I remember when we closed the store down do to lack of business, it was a sad day for all of us that worked there cause we all loved it so much. I never thought I could have the real games myself in our home but after watching you guys and johns arcade on youtube I felt that it was time so this is game number 1 LOL and cant wait to get it working. Thanks, Scott

Response from Jonathan: Scott,

First off, thank you for the kind words. We’re glad that you find our videos helpful. Of course, the videos really only tell part of the story. Make sure you check out our posts, podcasts and online store on our website for even more information on arcade repair. Speaking of our website, we also have a Question and Answer Database on our website where you can search through over 700 questions submitted by people like you and their answers from the Arcade Repair Tips Staff. Just doing a quick search, I found one question on testing the HOT that might help you out. Here’s the link: http://www.arcaderepairtips.com/question/how-test-hot/

Testing the flyback is a bit harder. You can test for shorts and make sure the resistance of each coil is within tolerance with a multimeter but this doesn’t really give you a good picture of whether the flyback is working properly. In order to determine that, you will need a ring tester. Here’s a link to one from AnaTek that’s very popular among arcade collectors: http://shop.anatekcorp.com/products/component-analyzers/blue-ring-tester-kit/

Let me also take a minute to mention that our Volume 2 DVD has exclusive videos on these 2 topics entitled Checking The Horizontal Output Transistor and Checking And Replacing The Flyback if you would like additional information. *end sales pitch* =)

With all of that said, it doesn’t sounds like your flyback or your HOT is bad. If this was the case, you would usually be blowing the fuses which you said were testing good. This leads me to believe that the problem is somewhere else in the power supply section of your monitor chassis. You might try testing the power at resistor R1 (looks like a white rectangle on the side of the monitor chassis). This should be reading around 120 VAC on one end and around 145 VAC on the other. If it doesn’t, then you could have some bad capacitors and/or resistors in the area (usually indicated with a 900 location number, i.e. C904, R902, etc.). It’s probably a good idea to install a cap kit and replace all of the resistors at this point. If the voltages are good, you might look for broken solder joints on the monitor especially around locations X303 & X304 and on the HV lines.

Hope that helps. It might not be that comprehensive but it should at least give you a start. Please let me know if you have any additional questions and we’ll try to help you out. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
