Taito Superman Arcade Cabinet
Question from Rich: Hello, I will be acquiring a working Taito Superman Arcade cabinet from a friend. I want to remove the monitor completely and replace it with an LCD monitor. Do I need to discharge the monitor if I want to replace it? I’m talking frame and all. Also, I’ve been trying to find a pre-built control panel to replace the current one. I’ve been looking at the X Arcade sticks but I’m worried they are too big. Are there other brands out there that make full control panels that you think might work better? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

Response from Jonathan: Rich,
We always encourage people to discharge the monitor before removing it just as a matter of safety. If the monitor is still holding a charge and you accidently drop the monitor or come in contact with the anode you could be in store for a nasty shock. With that said, you’ll probably be fine removing the monitor and the frame without discharging it as long as you are careful and use some common sense. We recommend removing all jewelry, watches, etc. before discharging or removing a monitor just so you don’t have to worry about those coming in contact with the tube. You might also use some rubber gloves just as a precaution.
There are some other companies besides X-Arcade that make pre-built control panels (like North Coast Custom Arcades and MikesArcade.com) but unfortunately the X-Arcade is one of the smaller panels I’ve seen. If you need a certain size control panel, you might be better off just reconfiguring your current control panel (i.e. adding/removing buttons and wiring it up to a keyboard encoder like the I-PAC). It’s not a hard process just time consuming.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your project.
