sega 18 wheeler and total vice

Question from John: New to the arcade game, not much experience with electronics, but I have two games I just got which I believe should be easy fixes, just need to know what to do. For my Sega 18 wheeler arcade, the whole system powers up, I get sound and everything appears to be working fine. But when I get to the screen that just has Sega printed in blue letters, the system freezes and wont go any further. I figure it’s some kind of software issue, just having trouble knowing where to start.

Second, I have a Total Vice arcade that works perfect except the vertical hold if off causing the image to constantly run up. I found the adjustment knob set on the cabinet, but the vertical hold knob seems to be missing. I have been looking on the internet for a replacement, figuring that will be the easiest solution, but cannot find any place to purchase the part. If you could direct me to where I can find one I would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks for your time and any help you can offer me.
John

Response from Jonathan: John,

Let’s cover your questions one at a time, shall we? Your Sega 18 Wheeler arcade uses the Sega Naomi system which is very picky about the voltages it receives. We recommend checking your power supply with a multimeter to make sure that your board is getting all of the correct voltages. Our post on Checking And Replacing A Power Supply should help you although your power supply is probably going to be a little different. Here’s a link to the manual for your game for some additional help: http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Manuals_and_Schematics/18%20Wheeler%20STD.pdfHere’s a quick tip: sometimes we like to turn up the power supply just a little more than normal (i.e. 5.1 on the +5 VDC line) just because of how power hungry this system is.

On your Total Vice, it looks like the plastic knob on your Vertical Centering potentiometer (or pot) has broken off. Our friend Bob Roberts sells replacement pots and should be able to help you identify the one that you need. Here’s a link to his Pots page: http://www.therealbobroberts.net/pots.html. Keep in mind that the only way to order from Bob is to send him and email with what you want, you send him a check and he will ship you the item. It’s kind of inconvenient but he does ship very fast and he’s the only one that carries some of the harder to find parts. Just send him and email with the picture you attached above and ask him how much with shipping and he should get a price back to you.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repairs.
