Area 51/max force monitor focus/contrast
Question from Kevin: Hello, I am a beginner in arcade collecting and repair. I am so happy I found your site and have to thank you for all that you do on this site. Because of this site, I took a non-working Maximum Force game with two broken light guns and turned it into a near completely refurbished duo, Area 51/Max. I say nearly, because I can not get the monitor to stay in focus from day to day. I adjust the focus and contrast on the monitor chassis until it is perfect. Then by the next day or sometime during that day, the focus will start to slightly go and I will start to get diagonal lines across the screen. The additional monitor controls near the coin mech do not seem to correct the issue. I have to use the controls on the chassis. Is there any way to fix this for good or do I need a new monitor chassis? On a side note, there is a red high voltage led lit on the PCB board but the game does not seem to be affected.

Response from Jonathan: Kevin,
First off, thank you for your kind words about our site. We’re glad that our content has been helpful to you. Make sure you stay tuned for even more content in the future.
As for your question, this sounds more like a monitor issue than a board or power supply issue. It’s probably time to install a cap kit on the monitor chassis to see if it helps the issue. It could be that some of the caps are starting to “bleed” additional voltage which is throwing your power/focus out of whack. Check out our post on Installing A Cap Kit for more information. If a cap kit doesn’t solve the issue, you may need to replace the flyback as the focus adjustment on it or the flyback itself could be bad.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
