arcade question please

Question from Devin: Hi! I recently bought an old World Class Bowling Deluxe arcade game. It seems to work very well overall, however the trackball does not register left or right. I bought a new trackball thinking it was the problem, however it reacts the same way. Some game play, settings, and high score initials, and volume all use the left and right motion so I know something is wrong. The only thing the game tells me is “low voltage” which may be the power supply. I would think that this would cause all of the motion on the trackball not to work though, but who knows. Any suggestions or ideas? I appreciate any help! Thanks! Devin

Response from Jonathan: Devin,

Yes, a low voltage setting can make a trackball and other parts of your game not work properly. We recommend starting off your repair by checking the voltage and making sure it’s correct. Check out our post on Checking And Replacing A Power Supply for more information. If you have a computer/ATX style power supply, you may need to check the power at a connector instead of the screw contacts. In this case, the red wire is typically your +5 VDC and the yellow wire is typically your +12 VDC. Make sure you adjust the power supply up/down as needed. Keep in mind that if you cannot get the +5 and +12 both in range (typically within a tenth of a volt) then you may need to replace the power supply.

Of course, the other problem could be that the trackball is not wired properly. At this point, you might check out the pinouts for World Class Bowling Deluxe (these can usually be found in the manual) and make sure that the right wires are going to the right place on the trackball. Here’s a link to the manual if you don’t have one already: http://gamesdbase.com/Media/SYSTEM/Arcade//Manual/formated/World_Class_Bowling_-_1995_-_Incredible_Technologies.pdf. You should be able to find the wiring for your trackball on the site for the retailer you bought it from.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
