Monitor repair

Question from Adam: I pulled a 32″ monitor out of a Street Fighter machine that weighs a pile. I am replacing the flyback on it and was wondering if I could test it after, without putting back in the machine until I know it’s fixed. I was wondering if I could hook up a 650w PC Power supply to test it before re-installing? The monitor has been out for 4 months without power. Thanks.

Response from Jonathan: Adam,

I assume you mean that you want to power the monitor with the 650W PC power supply. Well, the good news is that you shouldn’t need the PC power supply as most arcade monitors typically take AC power as the input. Unfortunately you may need an isolation transformer if your monitor requires one. The isolation transformer looks like a big brick in the bottom of the cabinet and usually has an AC input (usually 2 wires coming in the bottom of it) and output (usually 2 wires coming from the top of it). Our friend Bob Roberts has a great article on his web site that discusses transformers if you would like more information on what they do. Here’s a link: http://www.therealbobroberts.net/xformer.html

If your monitor does in fact require an isolation transformer then you will need to make sure that the power getting to the monitor is running through one. If the power is not going through an isolation transformer, you could cause damage to the monitor chassis. Now, if you’re monitor does not require an isolation transformer then you should be able to take a power cord and a compatible connector and power the monitor directly from an AC wall socket. This should be good enough for testing purposes. Of course, the power wires in your cabinet may be long enough to reach the monitor while it’s sitting on the ground which would be a bit easier than making a cable.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
