galaga barcade playing blind
Question from Rob: Hi, I recently bought a Galaga bartop original machine. It was working when I got it home for about four or five days ago. I woke up in the morning and the screen was not on anymore. Growing up working in a pawnshop I am used to being around a lot of broken electronics so I have some experience with repair but definitely none in the tube area. Anyways, after doing some online research I bought all four of your guide discs (GREAT VIDEOS!!!) and while very informative I am still having trouble narrowing down the problem. There is no red/orange glow at the yoke so I assume that means it is not getting power but the board right below the tube has two black wires coming in that have power. The fuse is soldered in but tests good for continuity and also does not appear to be blown. I’m having trouble testing the board right next to/underneath the yoke. So many wires I’m just not sure which ones to test. I tried the yellow one that’s wrapped around the post but I am unsure where to put my other lead on my tester to check for current. Anyways, just thought I might see if y’all could help me diagnose the issue. Thank you, Rob
P.S. Do you want to sell the Street Fighter II machine in the background and how much for it? I live in DFW and travel to different places a bit so it might be worth quite a trip.

Rob,
More than likely your Galaga has an Electrohome G07 monitor chassis in it. You mentioned that you’re not getting any neck glow. This is an indication of some sort of power/high voltage issue. Since your monitor was working, I would definitely start by making sure all of the connections are good. Please keep in mind that monitors of this age also tend to have lots of cold/cracked solder joints so you might want to go through and touch up any areas that look suspect. I’ve fixed many G07 monitors before just by touching up the solder on the HV line.
As for the Street Fighter 2, that one is actually a part of my personal collection. None of the games in my personal collection are “officially” for sale but I’ll let anything go for the right price. Warning up front though, the offer would have to be ridiculously high for me to consider it. 😉 Good news is that Street Fighter 2 cabinets are pretty common so, if you’re patient, you might be able to find one for a pretty reasonable price.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
