Arcade Monitor Removal
Question from Rich: Hello, I want to remove the monitor and chassis completely from my arcade cabinet. It’s been unplugged for 10 months, and I’ve disconnected the power supply inside the cabinet. I want to just unscrew the frame from the mounts and pull it out. My question is, if I do not discharge the monitor, will I be at risk for electrocution when pulling out the monitor by its frame? I’ve included some photos for reference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Response from Jonathan: Rich,
No, you should not be at risk for electrocution if you pull the monitor out by it’s frame and do not discharge it. The worse thing that could happen would be a big shock if you get your hand near the anode (or suction cup). This is why we highly recommend discharging the monitor.
Of course, our question to you would be why not discharge the monitor? It only takes a minute and it definitely makes the process of working with a CRT monitor safer. If you haven’t seen the presentation we gave at the HAAG Expo 2012 you should check it out. Here’s a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH23w7jxQIw. In this video, we actually bring people up on stage who have never discharged a monitor before and let them do it. They were all presently surprised by how easy it was to do.
Just to summarize, we highly recommend discharging the monitor before removing it but you will probably be fine if you decide not to. Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
