Police Trainer 2 tips
Question from April: Hello, my husband and I are new to arcade game repair. We bought several at auction a few weeks ago and most have issues. We bought a Police Trainer 2 game and it worked fine for a few weeks. One day, it just stopped loading properly. It now tries to boot up but then says it has a “kernel error” and won’t go any further. Any thoughts, tips or tricks would be amazing. We also have an Area 51 machine that was working great and then the monitor just went out. Been researching fly backs, hotlines, etc. but feel nervous as I’ve never discharged a monitor before and it sounds a little scary to me. Strange thing is that our Neo geo monitor went out too. Within days of each other. Both machines are “playing blind.” I wasn’t sure how to ask for these topics to be presented in your podcast so I hope that email works. Thanks so much! Response from Jonathan: April,
It is not uncommon for games to stop working shortly after being bought an auction. Many of the people who sell games at arcade auctions are trying to get them working very quickly which sometimes means that they cut corners. Also, moving games can cause stress on them which can cause them not to work as well. With that said, I’m not sure what the problem is with your Police Trainer 2 game. Good news is that there is an outside service which the original manufacturer recommends for getting technical support on your game. Here is a link that has the information for Skip who should be able to help you out: http://www.teamplayinc.net/hall-of-fame.html#TechSupport
Yes, discharging a monitor can be a scary experience but it’s something you’ll need to learn how to do in order to repair your monitor chassis (or to send it off for repair if your not comfortable working on it yourself). Just make sure that your read over the instructions in our post on Safely Discharging An Arcade Monitor and you should be fine.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repairs.
