Mirrored Monitor question
Question from Lisa: Hey, got a question for you guys. What monitor do you recommend for someone who wants to use a Space Invaders cabinet for a multicade? We’ve been using LCD monitors with built-in CGA/VGA converters from Happ for our other multicades. They won’t work in a SI cabinet because the image is reflected. All the text is backwards and there’s no option to flip it. We’ve got a nice dozen old SI cabinets and I’d like to put them to use. They’re instantly recognizable and easier to touch up than a Pac Man or a Centipede or such. So is there an image-mirroring board out there or a LCD that can do it internally? Thanks muchly, Lisa from Cleveland, Ohio

Response from Jonathan: Lisa,
Very interesting question. We haven’t tried to convert a Space Invaders cabinet to a 60-in-1 but we can definitely see the appeal. Unfortunately we don’t have a specific monitor we recommend since we’ve never run across this issue. With that said, I do believe there is a very small number of LCD monitors that have a “mirror image” function in their on-screen menu system. Of course, even if you could track down an LCD with the “mirror image” function it doesn’t mean it would be the right size or be mountable so you could easily put it in your cabinet. You can also get video converters that have this function but most of them I’ve seen are pretty expensive ($300+).
Your best (and cheapest) bet is probably to build a new shelf in the cabinet to hold the monitor in a position where you don’t need the mirror but where the player can still see the action. I’ve seen this done with Lethal Enforcers cabinets that have been converted but never with a Space Invaders. The process still shouldn’t be too bad but is obviously more work than it would take to make a multicade out of a Ms. Pac Man, Galaga or other classic cabinet.
Now, you could try using a computer with MAME instead of a multigame board if you’re computer savvy. Some computer video cards (and some MAME front ends) have the capability to flip and mirror the screen in software. This would remove the need to mirror the image on the LCD end as the computer would take care of it. Of course, using a computer with MAME for a multicade is much messier than using a pre-built multigame board but it’s at least another avenue you could look at.
Hope that helps. Sorry we could not give you a more definitive answer on your question but hopefully we’ve at least given you some things to think about. Please let us know if you come up with a solution so we can pass it on to our audience. Thank you for your question and good luck with your project.
