Wasn’t sure where it was ok to ask a question so thought I’d email

Question from Joe: I purchased a Warlords cocktail a few months ago and I’ve been reading everything I can on electronics repair. From watching your videos, I finally got up the confidence to crack this thing open. I’ve included a pic of what is on the screen. Self check doesn’t work. Cleaned the PCB and all connectors. Board is getting all powers (checked with a nice fluke meter) and I’ve checked all circuits on the board. It’s in really good shape as far as I can tell. I don’t have a logic probe yet but I would think that self check would at least work. Not looking for you to fix it would just like a direction to head in. I’m very new to electronics but believe I now have a good grasp after all of your videos and lots of electronics books and videos.

Response from Jonathan: Joe,

You can pretty much ask a question anywhere (email, website, YouTube, etc.) but sending it to this email address is definitely the best way to do it. Most of the question we receive via the other methods get put off until we do a Q&A Podcast episode.

As for your question, it definitely sounds like a board issue based on your description. The fact that the self check/test is not working would lead me to think that it’s a 6502 microprocessor problem. You can try replacing it to see if it makes a difference. We would also recommend replacing the 2101A RAM chips as well as these tend to fail over time. If you still can’t get the self check/test working at this point, you can try to use the logic probe to see if you can identify any problem parts/areas. Other than that, it might be best to send the board off to someone who specializes in board repair. Check out the Board (PCB) Repair & Component Sales heading on our resources page for a list of people who can help you get your board working. We would probably send this particular board off to Alex at Elektron Forge as he is usually pretty good at fixing these types of boards.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
