Monitor missing red input

Question from Jason: I was hoping you might be able to help me with a question. I recently bought a 1997 Joker Master off of a friend, he said monitor wasn’t working. I realized when I got it home that the white and green wire was both pulled loose. Having reconnected and jiggled neck board a little bit I got the monitor to turn on.

Only thing is now it seems the red is missing on the screen making it hard to adjust the monitor to make sure it is working properly. I swapped the red and blue input and what would normally be blue was then red, but didn’t see any blue on the screen. So thinking there is an issue in the red input line. I was wondering what the best way to go about it would be or if I am maybe overlooking something else.

Please note that the game is not playing blind.

Response from Jonathan: Jason,

There are several different things that might cause missing color issues like this. For one, you might try checking the input wiring that runs from the Joker Master board to the monitor chassis itself. Start off by tracing the wires that run from the harness to your monitor chassis to see if they are making a good connection. Since we’re not sure about what type of wiring your Joker Master board uses, we recommend referring to the manual to find where the video color wires are on your harness. You can use the continuity check on your multimeter to see if the wires have any breaks in them. Check out our post on Checking Fuses With A Multimeter for more information about continuity. If the wire is making a good connection, you might try touching up the solder on the back of the input pins on the monitor chassis. These pins like to come loose sometimes especially after years of unplugging and plugging in the connector.

If all the input wires are making a good connection on both the harness and the monitor connector ends but the problem continues then you may have an issue with a color drive transistor. It could be that your red drive transistor is acting up on your monitor and needs to be replaced. It could also be that the red gun on your tube is not working properly Check out our post on Checking A Monitor Tube for information about both of these issues.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
