Question from Mike: Gents: We are a skating rink in Fargo, ND and own several non-working arcade games. Unfortunately, we do not have anybody locally that can repair them. So we are hoping you can answer some questions. We I have about 4-5 games that I believe the boards need repair and I am wondering if we could send them to you for testing and repair. We also have a Sharp Shooter game that the CRT just literally went up in smoke. Do we need to just replace the CRT? Do we need both the crt and the sensors. Thanks in advance for your advice.

P.S. I really enjoy your videos. They have come in real handy. Excellent job.

Unfortunately we are not taking any boards in for repair at the moment but we do have some people we recommend. Eldorado Games at eldoradogames.com has a very good reputation and they usually get your board back to you in a reasonable amount of time. You might also try our friend Raymond at arcadecomponents.com. Raymond is very knowledgeable but he can get pretty busy so make sure you check with him before sending your board to him. There is also a list of additional board repair guys at http://www.arcaderepairtips.com/resources/ under the Board (PCB) Repair & Component Sales heading that might be able to help you out as well.

You will probably just need to either repair or replace the CRT. The sensors inside the guns should be fine. If you are going to replace the monitor, just remember that it MUST be replaced with another CRT. An LCD will not work in shooting games like Sharp Shooter, Area 51, Police Trainer, etc. They are designed to be used on CRT monitors only. With that said, your best bet will probably be to get the monitor repaired as getting CRT replacement monitors can be tough right now. More than likely, your flyback or another part on your monitor bit the dust which is why it went up in smoke. Check out our post on Troubleshooting Games That Are Playing Blind for some great tips on how to repair a non-working monitor chassis. Of course, you could also send your monitor chassis out for repair to one of the people we have listed on our resources page under the Monitor Repair Services & Information heading if you do not feel comfortable doing this type of repair yourself. Keep in mind that you will have to remove the chassis and ship it to them to get it repaired.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repairs.
