Operation Thunderbolt arcade
Question from Gail: I picked up this arcade game from a neighbor and after moving it, the video was all scrambled and now the monitor is pink with angled lines across it. The game will play and the video attempts to work. When the wiring is moved it affects the video also. I checked and cleaned the molex connection and have a tech check the board and clean it.
When the neighbor moved it everything bounced around in the cabinet because nothing was secured so I am not sure if something was loosened or damaged. At one point we had it working pretty good until we removed the board to clean it.
Will appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you for your help. Gail

Response from Jonathan: Gail,
The fact that the video changes when the wiring is moved leads us to believe this is probably a wiring issue. Now, it might not be the wires themselves as much as a problem with the connection on both ends of the wires. At this point, we would recommend looking for cracked or cold solder joints on the input pins (i.e. where the wires come in from the main board) of your monitor chassis. You might try removing your monitor chassis and inspecting it to see if you can find any joints like this then touch them up with some fresh solder using a soldering iron. If you want to be sure that the wiring is making a good connection, you can always use the continuity check on your multimeter to test the connection. The process is pretty much the same one that we discuss in our post on Checking Fuses With A Multimeter except you put one probe on each end of the wire instead of on the ends of a fuse.
Also, make sure that every connector in your cabinet is connected properly. It could be that when the game bounced around something came loose so double check all of these connections. You may even want to disconnect and reconnect them just to ensure that the proper connections are being made. You might also pull the main board out and reinspect it just to make sure everything looks OK after the cleaning process. Sometimes when we clean boards we can accidently cause some issues especially with older boards (i.e. 20-30 years old).
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
