Silver Strike Bowling monitor

Question from AJ: My Silver Strike Bowling monitor is not working. The problem occurred a couple of months ago. While playing the game with some friends, the screen when blank and we smelt smoke coming from the back of the game. Seems like everything else is working but I haven’t left it on long enough to hear the game play. I’ve noticed a small snapping (which I’m assuming is normal) sound coming from the glow neck, but the monitor won’t fire up. In not wanting to do more damage, I haven’t left the game on too long. Is there a good place to start troubleshooting? I’ve already checked fuses and power. Everything tests normal. In advance, I appreciate both your time and your help with my arcade game. Thank you! AJ

Response from Jonathan: AJ,

It sounds like your Silver Strike Bowling cabinet is experiencing a issue we like to call playing blind. This occurs when the game is working but there is no picture on your arcade monitor. The smoke smell that came from the back of your game was probably due to some electronic components on your monitor chassis failing (more than likely your flyback along with some others). At this point, we recommend checking out our post on Troubleshooting Games That Are Playing Blind for some tips on how to get your arcade monitor working again.

Of course, in order to know which parts you need to order you will need to determine the make/model of your monitor chassis. To identify your monitor chassis, go to the What’s My Monitor page on Bob Roberts site and see which one looks the closest to the one in your game. Once you have identified the chassis, you should be able to order the parts from Bob to fix your monitor. Once the parts come in, replace them and you should be good to go. If you need more instruction on this, we have an extended version of the Troubleshooting Games That Are Playing Blind video on our Volume 4 DVD which shows you all of the steps from start to finish. We highly recommend this if you’re looking to tackle this project yourself.

Of course, if you do not feel comfortable fixing this monitor yourself, we do have several people that we recommend for monitor repair. Check out the Monitor Repair Services & Information section on our resources page for a list of people who can help you out. Please keep in mind that you will need to discharge the monitor and remove the chassis in order to get it repaired.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
