Ms. Pac-Man cabinet

Question from Leif: Hello, I have a Ms. Pac-Man cabinet with what looks to be the original PCB working with a Game ROM from 1999 connected to it. I have 2 fuses to replace tonight, but although I am really hopeful; I don’t expect that to put a picture up on the monitor. I was told the monitor is out, from the guy I bought it from. I can hear the sound.

I was thinking about starting from scratch with the cabinet, pulling the old guts out and putting in a 412-in-1 board. Can you tell me if this is the right approach (correct shopping list) to move forward with to create a 412-in-1 JAMMA arcade? Please let me know if you sell any of the items I need. I will buy from you since you are confirming/providing the info. I just want to get it going so I can play the classics as soon as reasonably possible.

Items needed?

– Game PCB or JAMMA board
– JAMMA harness
– LCD Monitor
– Additional buttons
– Modify the control panel to hold the additional buttons
– Power supply

Am I missing anything? Thanks for any info. Leif

Response from Jonathan: Leif,

It sounds like your list is pretty complete. We do not sell any arcade parts but we do have a list of people we recommend under the Arcade Parts Suppliers & Distributors heading on our resources page. You might particularly check out Michael at The Cajun Arcade as he should carry most of the items you are looking for.

Now, let me give you a couple of things to think about. You might consider using a Pac Man to JAMMA adapter in your cabinet (like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/JAMMA-PCB-to-Ms-Pacman-cabinet-adapter-board-takes-ATX-power-supply-/141789337977?hash=item21034d9979) instead of rewiring it JAMMA. This will save you some time and make it to where you can take the cabinet back to a dedicated Pac Man without having to rewiring it later. Also, these adapters typically have a place to plug in a power supply which means that you can leave the original power supply in tact and not worry about removing it. You can see a bit on how this adapter and power supply setup works in our post on Installing A Multicade Upgrade Kit (For Pac Man Cabinets).

Another item you might consider is repairing your current CRT monitor instead of replacing it with an LCD. We personally prefer the look of the original CRT monitor to an LCD and repairing it is usually a bit cheaper than going the LCD route. We have a post on Troubleshooting Games That Are Playing Blind that has a lot of great info on how to repair problems like you are experiencing with your monitor. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this type of repair yourself, we do have several people we recommend to repair monitors under the Monitor Repair Services & Information heading on our resources page. Of course, you will need to discharge the monitor and remove the monitor chassis in order to send it off for repair.

Again, these are just some suggestions. Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions about anything we have mentioned or about your project in general. Hope that helps.
