Arcade Monitor

Question from Danny: Hey guys, I have an arcade game here that my roommate and I just bought. It had no back door on it so my roommate was measuring it to get the dimensions so I could cut a back door for it. He touched something around the area of the back of the tube, not sure if it was on the tube or on the board that’s on the back of the tube, anyway it sparked and now, as you can see in the attached photo, the screen is flooded with pink. I think if had an idea of what it could be (if it’s a fixable problem) I could fix it, I’m pretty handy with electronics.

Is there any advice that you can give me on this?

Great Video’s and webpage BTW.

Thanks,
Danny

Response from Jonathan: Danny,

Based on your picture, we’re guessing that your roommate probably touched the back of the neck board with the tape measure which shorted out some parts. It looks like maybe the color transistors (the green one in particular) were the victim of your roommates accidental escapade. Now, there is a possibility that your roommate shorted a tube pin which could be very bad news for getting this working again. For the moment, we will assume that this is not the case. With all that said, highly recommend checking out our post on Checking A Monitor Tube particularly the second half of the video on checking/replacing color transistors. If the color transistors seem to be working, check out the first part on checking the colors of the tube with an alligator clip. If you do not get the same results that we show in the video, you could have a bad tube which means you will need to hunt down a compatible replacement to get it working again.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
