Donkey Kong 60-in-1 Kit
Question: Hi and good morning, I am very confused and I would like to know if you can help me. I would like to buy a 60-in-1 classic games kit and I have a Donkey Kong with the original Sanyo CRT monitor. My question is if I can install the 60-in-1 without any kind problems since the 60-in-1 card has a VGA output. I’m very lost and would like to know exactly what I need to do to install this kit. Even if I do not buy this I would certainly appreciate it if you could help me. Thanks.

Response from Jonathan: You have a couple of options if you want to install a 60-in-1 board in your Donkey Kong cabinet. The first thing you must realize is that the 60-in-1 board uses the JAMMA wiring standard and your Donkey Kong does not. Please check out our post on Getting Familiar With The JAMMA Standard for more information. Since your Donkey Kong is not currently using the JAMMA wiring standard, you will either have to rewire the cabinet using a JAMMA harness or get some kind of adapter for the current harness in your cabinet. Cambridge Arcade sells an adapter if you wish to go this route instead of rewiring your cabinet. This is the way we usually install 60-in-1 boards in classic arcade cabinets as it keeps the current wiring harness in tact which allows you to easily convert the cabinet back to the original game. You might check out our post on Installing A Multicade Upgrade Kit (For Pac Man Cabinets) as it shows how this adapter method works on a Ms. Pac Man cabinet and the process will be similar for your Donkey Kong cabinet.
Yes, the 60-in-1 does have a VGA output but it also has a standard arcade video output that’s wired through the JAMMA edge connector. The VGA adapter is really only useful if you’re installing a 60-in-1 board in a cabinet that has a monitor that accepts a VGA input. For example, many people in recent years have replaced the CRT monitors in their cabinets with LCD monitors. Most LCD monitors have a VGA input which would make it easier to connect it using that method instead of through the video input wires.
