Control buttons need fixing or replacement
Question from Jeff: Hey guys, just got a working Asteroids Deluxe arcade game (large cabinet). Plays ok except the fire button doesn’t respond like it should. I can’t fire as rapidly as I know I should. I cleaned it and even swapped the Shield and Fire buttons to no avail. Is it the spring or the mechanism under the button? Maybe a better, more advanced button than the original that I could buy? Thanks for any tips you might have! Jeff in Seattle

This is an interesting issue. Yes, there could be a problem with your buttons (spring, mechanism, etc.) especially if they are the original ones that came with the cabinet. You could always order some new leaf switch buttons and see if they make a difference. Twisted Quarter sells them along with the other parts distributors we have listed on our resources page.
Now, if you are saying that your cabinet doesn’t fire as fast as it did when you played it back when you were a kid, it could be that the operator installed the speed up mod on his cabinet. This mod speeds up the overall gameplay. You can learn more about this mod from the Asteroids Troubleshooting Encyclopedia. In this case, you can install this mod on your board and it should give you the speed you are looking for.
