Help with Cabinet Restoration

Question from Randall: Hi there! I came across your website recently because I inherited a Galaxian cabinet from a friend. It’s currently not functioning and I’m pretty sure it’s the PCB; however, I haven’t been able to test this.

Anyway, in my searches online to figure things out, I came across your site. I’ve decided that what I’d really like to do is leave the original parts intact and install either a Raspberry Pi or an iCade 60-in-1 board. I wondering if you’d be able to help me in understanding this endeavor and perhaps send me to some videos or links that might help me achieve this goal.

If this is a service you charge for, I’d be happy to pay too.

Thanks so much!

Response from Jonathan: Randall,

Unlike Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man and Galaga cabinets, no one has made a Galaxian cabinet to JAMMA board adapter which means that using a Raspberry Pi or 60-in-1 board in your cabinet while leaving the original parts intact (what we call a non-destructive conversion) might prove difficult. With that said, there are some options available to you if you still want to install these boards in your cabinet.

Many people have had luck modifying a Pac Man/Ms. Pac Man to JAMMA cabinet adapter (the same adapter we discuss in our post on Installing A Multicade Upgrade Kit (For Pac Man Cabinets)) to work with Galaxian. As you can see from these Pac Man pinouts on MikesArcade.com, the wiring on both game boards is very similar so it really only requires a couple of mods in order to get this adapter working with your Galaxian cabinet. Unfortunately the JAMMABoards.com store (where we got our Pac Man/Ms. Pac Man to JAMMA cabinet adapters) has been down ever since the owner passed away. The good news is that Hot Rod Arcade has stepped up and started offering an adapter that does the same thing with a few improvements. If you decide to go this route, you might mention in your email to Chris at Hot Rod Arcade what you are trying to do and he might be able to give you a few pointers on how to accomplish it.

Your other option would be to rewire the cabinet. If you go this route, you could leave the original wiring harness in-tact but we find it much easier to remove all of the original wiring just so you don’t get confused about which wires are associated with which harness. If you go the Raspberry Pi route, you will need to wire up the cabinet according to the instructions you are following to use it in an arcade cabinet. If you go the 60-in-1 route, you should be able to just install a JAMMA harness in the cabinet and plug the board up. The choice is up to you. If you decide to wire the cabinet using a JAMMA harness, you could still use your Galaxian board in the cabinet (if it’s working) by getting a Galaxian board to JAMMA harness adapter like this one from MikesArcade.com. Otherwise it might be difficult to convert the cabinet back to a Galaxian should you want to do that in the future.

As far as any charges go, we don’t charge anything for answering questions; however, we would appreciate it if you would consider ordering our DVDs from our online store. Each DVD contains several videos from our web site along with some exclusive videos that are not available online. Watching our videos should give you a better understanding about how arcade games work which should help you out with your Galaxian project.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your future repairs.
