Silver Strike Question

Question from David: Hello, I have a Silver Strike Bowling arcade. It has been turned off for a couple months, but I have never had any problems with it. When I powered it up, it comes on but I get no sound and no video. The monitor seems to power up, but it’s just kinda grey. Over a week or two I have powered it up just to see what happens. Every once in awhile it will power up as it should and works fine but it either locks up while playing, or we are done using it we turn it off, and then we’re back to square one. Any suggestions? Thanks, Dave

David,

From your description, it sounds like your switching power supply is not working properly. We recommend starting off this repair by making sure that the power supply is sending the correct voltage to your board. Use your multimeter and the JAMMA pinouts (most versions of Silver Strike Bowling use a JAMMA I/O board but you might check your manual to make sure this is the case for yours) to make sure that the correct voltage is getting to the board. Check out our post on Checking And Replacing A PowerSupply for more information.

Now, your arcade might have an ATX style power supply in it in which case the process to check the voltage might be a bit different than what we discuss in our post. The good news is that it’s actually easier to check. Basically you check the voltage at a connector instead of the screw contacts. The red wire is typically your +5 VDC and the yellow wire is typically your +12 VDC. Make sure you adjust the power supply up/down as needed. Keep in mind that if you cannot get the +5 and +12 both in range (typically within a tenth of a volt) then you may need to replace the power supply.

Also, since we believe that your game is using the JAMMA standard, you might also check out our posts on Getting Familiar With The JAMMA Standard so you can understand how it works. Of course, feel free to contact us again if you have any additional questions and we’ll try to help you out.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and keep us updated on your progress.
