Tekken 3 project
Question from Robert: Hey y’all! I appreciate the help with whatever you can tell me. I recently found an untested project cabinet of my favorite game ever, Tekken 3. I’ll put the link in here for y’all to see and I was wondering what y’all might be able to see from the photos. It looks like I need a monitor with it’s chassis right? Is that it? I’m very new to this and from what I can tell it has a power supply and a full PCB but I may be wrong. If you can tell if this is a good deal or what I will need I would really appreciate it. This is close enough to me I could pick it up and save on shipping.
Also, after some digging on YouTube, I saw a similar cabinet with a Wells Gardner K7000 monitor but I have no clue where to find one or how much it would be.

Response from Jonathan: Robert,
Yes, it will need a monitor of some sort: either a CRT tube and chassis or a LCD monitor. A Wells Gardner K7000 series arcade monitor would work but tracking one down might be an issue as they are no longer in production. The only way to get your hands on one of these would be to buy one used from another arcade collector or operator. Now, you can buy new CRT and LCD arcade monitors from many of the parts suppliers listed on our resources page but they can be quite expensive (around the $400-$600 range not including shipping costs). Your other option would be to use an off-the-shelf TV or computer monitor and use a converter board (such as the Gonbes GBS-8220) to convert the signal from your arcade board to one the display can use. This is the cheapest method but it can sometimes cause lag which is not good especially when you are dealing with fighting games. There are other options but these are the most common. The choice is up to you.
Yes, it does have the power supply and PCB but there’s no way to tell if they are working or not. The good news is that these parts together are much cheaper than the monitor (around $100-$150 for the pair) so even if they are not working, you won’t be out a bundle to replace them.
Now, is this a good deal? I would say it’s a fair deal. A good deal would probably be somewhere between $50-$100. You might try and make the guy an offer and see if he takes it. Just keep in mind, as we’ve discussed here, that getting this game to a working state will require a lot of effort on your part. If you don’t mind that effort, it might be worth picking up. Otherwise you might wait for another Tekken 3 to come up for sale.
One more thing, since you’re on Facebook and you seem to be around the Myrtle Beach area, we HIGHLY recommend joining the Carolina Arcade and Pinball Collectors group. If you post there, you might be able to find the guy who owns this cabinet or someone who has another Tekken 3 cabinet for sale in better condition. Definitely worth a shot.
OK, last thing I promise. 😉 Since you are new to arcade games, make sure you check out all of the posts and videos on the Arcade Repair Tips website. We also HIGHLY recommend listening to our Q&A Podcast, an audio podcast where we answer questions from people just like you.
