10 Yard Fight cabinet
Question from Paul: Hey guys! I’m excited to say that I just picked up my first couple cabs for a great price (methinks) on Craigslist. While 25 dollars for Golden Tee Fore and 10 Yard Fight sounds pretty good, it stands to reason that both cabs need some love.
My main interest would definitely be with the 10YF cab as I hold some nostalgic value to the NES game. The details as best I can give are this:
When I plug the cabinet in, there is no audible or visual representation of registered power. I plugged Golden Tee in and got the usual hum to life, along with a few crackles from behind the screen, but nothing for 10YF. After reading your entries on checking power supplies, I tried to test a bit myself (I should note that from best that I can figure, the original power supply was changed to a more modern, switching power supply at some point in it’s life). I tested the first wires coming from the AC-3 box, and was shown power. I admit that I honestly don’t know where or how to check power at the next step, the transformer. This thing is HUGE and looks corroded and honestly guys I think it may be my problem. From there the wires go out to the power supply.
Now I did email Bob Roberts and briefly ask him for advice while uploading a couple pics of the transformer and power supply, and he seemed to think I needed a new power supply. Before I went ahead and bought one, I decided I could go ahead and install the PS from Golden Tee (they are the exact same) and see if I got any difference. With the known working PS installed, I saw no difference.
I guess what I’m getting at with all this is do you think I need a new transformer? Should I take this problem to a forum site? If so can you recommend a good one? Or would you like to throw some advice out there in which case would you like some pictures of the inside of the cab? Maybe something’s plugged in wrong? As I said in the beginning this is my first cab, and while I’m not afraid of taking things apart, soldering, etc., I don’t really have any prior experience on where to make my next step. I think maybe the transformer due to it’s rough shape, but I can’t be sure on my own.
Anyway guys if you’ve made it through this, you have my thanks for just reading it all haha, and any advice or help would be immensely appreciated!
Many thanks,
Paul

Response from Jonathan: Paul,
Wow! $25 for both cabinets is a heck of a deal. Congrats!
As for your question, it does sound like you are having some power issues with your cabinet. Now, this could be caused by the transformer being bad but you should be able to wire the switching power supply directly to the AC voltage coming from the wall without going through the transformer which should power the board and hopefully give you some sound out of the speakers. In most modern cabinets, the transformer is only used for the monitor. Without seeing any pictures, I’m thinking that someone probably wired in a switching power supply at some point and left the original wires and transformer in the cabinet which made for a venerable rats’ nest of wiring. In this case, it would probably be best to rewire the cabinet using Bob Roberts’s AC wiring recommendations especially if you plan on keeping this cabinet for a while. I think Bob may be out of stock on isolation transformers but Twisted Quarter still carries them if you want to replace your current one. You might also need the 10-Yard Fight pinouts as they will help you know where the wires should hook up to in your cabinet.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
