Defender help
Question from Geoff: Hi Jonathan. I have an Upright Defender and I have included some pics of my boards. It’s been in storage for years, it went into storage fully restored and fully working with no issues. Now, of course, I’m having some issues. Before I send all my boards out for testing, I wanted to see if you may be able to troubleshoot it because I’m no expert but I don’t think it has any major problems.
It powers up, all lights are working and it makes a humming noise. There is no picture and no game sounds BUT at the moment of powering up, a full screen white flash appears then it quickly disappears to a dead screen. All boards have red lights lit up and the monitor tube is glowing orange which I think is a good thing.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Geoff

Response from Jonathan: Geoff,
It sounds like you could be having a power supply or board issue. We would probably start off by checking the power supply first to make sure the board is getting the correct voltage. In our post that features the HAAG Arcade Expo 2013 Seminars, there is a link to a Williams Diagnostics Guide (with Schematics) that was done by Ken Graham. Ken worked for Williams at one time and put this guide together to help people diagnose problems with their Williams games (such as Defender). We recommend watching Ken’s seminar and using the Williams Diagnostics Guide to help you troubleshoot this issue.
Another common cause for this problem would be an issue with the ribbon cables that connect the boards. If you continue to have issues with your Defender after verifying that the voltage is correct, you might try replacing all of these ribbon cables to see if it solves the issue. You should be able to order these ribbon cables from some of the entities mentioned on our resources page under the Arcade Parts Suppliers & Distributors heading. Please feel free to contact us back if you continue to have issues after checking these areas.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
