ironman offroad repair question

Question from Austin: I am looking at buying an Ironman Off Road arcade machine. The machine all works with the exception of half of the track not displaying during the races. The seller claims it needs a ram sync chip – 74F74 U28 and that I should be able to find one easily and fix it. Can you advise me if that is true or what kind of repair I would be looking at if I tried to get it fixed? Thanks for your help.

Response from Jonathan: Austin,

It’s definitely plausible that replacing that chip could solve the issue. Of course, if the repair was that easy why hasn’t he taken care of it himself? The thing about board problems (and this definitely sounds like a board problem) is that they can be tough to track down depending on the issue. Yes, replacing that chip could solve the issue but if it doesn’t it could be tough to find which parts are causing the problem. At this point, you could send the board off to one of the repair guys listed under the Board (PCB) Repair & Component Sales heading on our resources page but it would be a bit expensive. I’m guess around the $100-150 range, please note this is just a guess. You could also try purchasing a new board but it looks like they don’t come up for sale very often and, when they do, they are expensive.

We would probably use this as a negotiation tactic when purchasing this game. Basically telling the seller that if the chip doesn’t fix the issue, you could be out an additional $100 or more to get it completely working. Hopefully he will take a bit off the price due to this fact.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your future repairs.
