Sound issues with Street Fighter 3: Third Strike board
Question from Ian: Hello, I have a question and I hope you can help. I bought an arcade cabinet, a Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, and I was advised that the volume would come and go sometimes. I have had the cabinet for about 2 months and have had almost no issues but the volume has been coming and going lately. It starts really low and then goes high and then some times just shuts off. I’m wondering if this would be a speaker thing or could it be the JAMMA board? How would I check it and how can I fix this? Any help would be great. Thanks, Ian

Response from Jonathan: Ian,
First off, we highly recommend that you check out our post on Troubleshooting Games With Sound Issues as it has some great tips on how to repair sound issues with arcade games. With that said, it’s a good idea at this point to make sure that the voltage going to your Street Fighter 3: Third Strike board is correct. Keep in mind that some boards require a -5 VDC line in order for the sound to work properly. If the voltage is correct, it could be a problem with the volume pot as well. Check the volume pot to make sure that it is hooked up and working properly.
Since Street Fighter 3: Third Strike is a CPS-3 game, you might check out this video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUMDBD891XI. The creator of this video discusses how to troubleshoot sound issues with CPS-3 games. Please note this is not our video but we thought it might be helpful to you.
If the problem continues after trying all of these techniques then it could be caused by a bad audio amp, DAC or other parts on the board itself. At this point, you might check out our post on Inspecting An Arcade Board as it will help you identify problem areas on the board that could be causing this problem. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us and we’ll try to help you out further.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
