Aloha!

Question from Bayly: Aloha! I have a 1988 Sky Soldiers game and I am finally getting around to refurbishing it. One of the issues I am having is that I get a “rolling screen” and in turn the audio is “rolling too.” Below I attached a video of the monitor so hopefully you can see and hear what’s going on.

One other thing I started noticing is that when I turn the game off I get orange lines that filter to the middle. I assume this is do to the age of the monitor. I also attached a video of that too.

I thank you in advance for all of your help and great videos! They are extremely helpful!

Aloha!

Response from Jonathan: Bayly,

Aloha to you as well. I can’t say I’ve been to Hawaii but it’s some where I’ve always wanted to visit. I’m sure it’s beautiful this time of year (and any time of the year for that matter).

As for your question, a rolling screen (and audio) such as you are describing can be caused by grounding issues with the game. Many times operators would remove the ground prong from the plug of an arcade cabinet if they were installing the game in an establishment that only had the standard 2 prong outlets. With that said, we recommend starting off this repair by either replacing your plug or your power cord to make sure your game is properly grounded. Please check out our posts on Replacing A Plug On A Power Cord and Replacing A Power Cord for more information.

It’s also a good idea to make sure that all of the grounding wires in your cabinet are hooked up properly and are making a good connection. Sometimes a bad ground on the power supply itself can cause these “rolling” issues so you may need to replace the power supply altogether if the problem continues. On Pac Man cabinets, a bad fuse holder can cause this issue (what we call the hum bar effect) so replacing the fuse holder can also help. As you can see, there are many things that can cause this problem which makes it hard to narrow down the exact cause. You may notice though that it all has to do with the power supply section of the cabinet. Focus in on that section and hopefully you can solve this problem with a little bit of knowledge and a lot of patience. Of course, feel free to contact us again if you have any additional questions about your issue.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
