PC power supply won’t come on

Question from William: Hi, I’ve watched your videos and they are great! I learned how to hook a JAMMA Harness to a PCB from your videos. Now I have a question. I got a PC power supply and I hooked it up to the four pin power port on my 60-in-1 board but it’s not turning on. I have dip switch 2 in the on position on the 60-in-1 PCB for Power On and Off but it’s not turning on. I’ve tried different 4 pin cables from the PC power supply but it’s not working. Do you have any ideas how to fix this without buying a NEW power supply?

Response from Jonathan: William,

It’s important to note that most off-the-shelf PC power supplies are not designed to turn on automatically. The power supply would usually be hooked up to a motherboard which, in turn, had a switch connected to it that would send the power on signal through the motherboard to the power supply. In order to get the power supply to come on by itself, we have to “fool” it by jumpering the two power switch wires on the ATX connector together or to a switch. Check out this article from Instructables for more information on this process. Hope that helps.
