Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition Won’t Boot
Question from Adam: Hello. I recently acquired a Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition “Big Blue” machine. I power it up and the screen turns on but the game won’t boot up. I have verified that the PCB is receiving the correct voltage at the JAMMA port. The fan plugged into the bottom of the board also powers up. The board also looks to be in great condition. There is no discoloration, bulging capacitors, or bad solder points. I also noted that the coin counter also changes when I trigger the coin switch.
I’m new to working with arcade cabinets an want to know what else I can do to troubleshoot the game. I’ve attached a picture of the PCB. Also, what are the four white ports labeled CN1, CN2, CN3, CN4?
Thanks for your help.

Response from Jonathan: Adam,
From your picture, it looks like you only have the bottom half (or A board) of a CPS-2 board set. In order for the CPS-2 board set to function, you need an A board (which contains the JAMMA connector and all the common components) and a B board (which contains the information for the game you want to play). B boards are usually color-coded by region (USA is blue, Japan is green ,etc.) and sit on top of the A board. The B board connects to the A board via the 4 white connectors you see protruding from the top. Since the A board does not contain any game specific data, you will need to purchase a B board for the game you want to play to attach to the A board currently in your cabinet. Of course, this is assuming that the A board that’s currently in your cabinet is working. Now, you could replace the entire CPS-2 board with another complete CPS-2 set or another JAMMA board altogether if you want. The choice is up to you.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
