Bad Dudes monitor issue
Question from Tom: Hello, I have a 1988 Bad Dudes arcade game. I have kept the old game but rewired it with a new loom taking time and labeling each connection. Once I rewired it. I noticed the video was upside down. That was a simple fix reversing the video plug on the PCB. It worked great for about two weeks, then I noticed the video seemed to be off center a bit so I adjusted the screen from the back and had it perfect almost. When I made the adjustment I accidently moved the one of the raster knobs and it made the screen brighter, I turned it down right away and everything seemed fine. A few days later while playing a game the video just went blank (playing blind). I unhooked power, rechecked the PCB and the video board fuse was blown. I noticed a lower value was installed (it called for 5a slow blow) so picked up at Radio Shack and installed the proper fuse. I rechecked everything and it all looked good. Then, I turned the power back on. The fuse near the power supply glowed yellow and smoked. I unplugged it right away. Any ideas if this could be my flyback, isolation or power supply? Where would you start? Thank you very much. You guys have great videos! Tom

Response from Jonathan: Tom,
It sounds like it could be either a bad HOT (Horizontal Output Transistor) or flyback. We highly recommend checking out our post on Troubleshooting Games That Are Playing Blind as it has some great advice on how to proceed with this issue. The monitor chassis that we discuss in this post is a Wells Gardner K7000 series and so the repair steps could be somewhat different depending on the chassis that’s in your Bad Dudes cabinet. You might check out the What’s My Monitor page on Bob Roberts site if you need help determining what chassis is currently installed in your cabinet. It has pictures of different chassis models that you can hopefully use to figure out what you have. Of course, feel free to send us additional information (such as model numbers, pictures, etc.) if you have any trouble identifying or repairing your chassis and we’ll try to help you out further.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
