Ms. Pacman Wells Gardner K700 Monitor brightness flickers

Question from Joey: Hi,

I recently bought a Ms. Pac Man with the 60-in-1 upgrade kit. I’ve been trying to learn about arcade machines by watching some of your videos and they have been helpful. Before I bought the machine the guy a bought it from (an experienced collector) replaced all the caps. When I brought it back to my house I was soon having some screen folding issues, which was resolved when I had him re-solder the cards, which seemed to be corroded.

My most recent problem is just with my monitor brightness fluctuating from darker to lighter with the occasional white flickering lines of the screen. It is seemingly very random, sometimes it wont do it for 20-25 minutes and sometimes it will do it often. Everything is working well, but the random brightness changes and flickering is really annoying. The guy said it could be the old power supply causing the issue. From reading some blogs, I was going to play around the brightness setting on the flyback to see if that helps the issue. I’ve also heard about the degaussing coil causing issues similar to these. This has all been happening within a months time. What do you think the issue could be or what should I try? I’ll try to get a video of it if that helps as well

Thank you,
Joey

Response from Jonathan: Joey,

Usually random brightness changes like this are caused by an issue in the power supply section of the monitor chassis. Adjusting the brightness / contrast on the chassis and the flyback is a great place to start. We would also recommend checking the B+ voltage to make sure it is in range. We’ve seen this issue occur in some monitors when the B+ voltage is too low. It might also be worth taking the chassis out and looking for any cracked or broken solder joints as these may be causing this issue as well. Other than that, it could possibly be a flyback issue. At this point, we would probably replace it to see if it solves the problem. Please let us know if you get the problem resolved or if you need additional help and we’ll try to help you out.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
