Rampage Arcade question
Question from Jeff: Hey guys, been listening to your podcasts a lot lately and they have been very helpful. I’m wondering if you can help me chase down something I have been wrestling with. I picked up a Rampage machine and right out of the gate the sound worked but then it stopped working after I had it plugged in for a while. Then it would come back after playing a while longer. It did this sort of come and go thing for a while and then it was gone completely. I was also having some sprite issues so I started by replacing the power supply because I know that can do a lot of strange things. The sprite issue ended up being a board issue and I got that fixed but still no sound.
I ended up getting a new sound board off E-bay and now it works but the sound is super loud. adjusting the potentiometer inside the coin door does nothing so I replaced that and it’s still doing the same thing. Any ideas what I should be looking at. There is a small amp board that I haven’t messed with but other than that I’m not sure what to do next. The game just isn’t as much fun when I unplug the sound 😉
Thanks, Jeff

Response from Jonathan: Jeff,
The potentiometer should adjust the volume unless it is the wrong value or it’s not hooked up correctly. Start off by double checking the wiring to make sure it is connected properly. If everything is connected properly then you could have the wrong value for your volume potentiometer. Try this 25 Ohm one from Holland Computers:Â http://www.hollandcomputers.com/store/pc/Solderless-25-Ohm-3-Watt-Rheostat-Pre-wired-For-JAMMA-Arcade-Cabinet-Installation-20-Tolerance-for-Mame-and-Jamma-2512p10951.htm?idaffiliate=38. We have used it in a number of projects and have always had great success with it. Hope that helps.
