pac man arcade issues

Question from Aaron: The screen has big white lines going through it. The sound seems to be working perfectly fine, and the controls seem to be responsive, but obviously I still can’t play it. Have you come across this problem before and if so how much it would be to fix such a problem? The only way to turn on the machine is to hold the white switch in the back with some duck tape or anything that’ll hold it down, other than that it doesn’t turn on. See the video on my YouTube channel for exact issue. Thanks,Aaron

Response from Jonathan: Aaron,

First off, the white switch in the back that you described is called an interlock or kill switch. They are made to stop the machine from turning on when you are working on them. Yes, you can push them in to get the game to power on. You can also pull them out and this will allow you to turn on the game without having to hold this switch down. Try pulling out the switch and see if this works for you.

Now, let’s discuss your monitor issue. I’m having a hard time determining in the video if you can see any sort of picture through the big white lines. Typically big white lines like these are caused by someone turning up the brightness and/or contrast too high on the monitor. You should be able to adjust these settings to get the big white lines to go away. Check out our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor for more information. Of course, if you get the big white lines to go away but you still don’t have a picture then you still have a problem. At this point, you might want to check the wiring between your Pac Man board and your monitor. You should see some wires that go to a connector that attaches to the monitor chassis. Make sure that these are connected properly as this is how video gets to your monitor.

So, let’s try these steps out and see how it goes. Please feel free to email us back if you continue to have problems after trying everything we’ve recommended. Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
