Viewer Question – Volume Control
Question from Corry: Hi guys, I’ve enjoyed catching up on a lot of your video series episodes the last month or so as I’ve been building a bartop MAME (based on RaspberryPi) and restoring a full size cabinet and turning it into a 60-in-1. For my full size cabinet, I’m turning a Make Trax cabinet into a 60-in-1. I’m currently using the JAMMA speaker connection (not the 1/8″ jack on the PCB) which is connected to a 6×9 speaker in the cabinet. I’d really like to get a volume control in-line. I tired adding multiple pot’s between 200K ohm to 1M ohm. They’re all way to sensitive – meaning turning the pot an extremely small amount changes the volume dramatically instead of a slower ramp down. Any ideas how to add a volume control like this? Thanks, Corry

Response from Jonathan: Corry,
It sounds like the pots you have been using are too high in value. Try a lower value pot (like a 5K or 10K) instead and see if it works better. You can get these pots from Bob Roberts at http://www.therealbobroberts.net. Visit the parts page and do a search for “Volume Pot” and you should find what you are looking for. Of course, you should be able to get a lower value pot from the parts supplier who sold you the other pots as well.
Also, here is a link to a volume pot wiring diagram just so you can compare your wiring to it as a double check: http://scarvell.net/wiki/images/3/37/Vol_Pot_Wiring.jpg. It sounds like you have been wiring it up properly but it’s always good to check it again just in case.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your project.
