Adjusting Arcade Monitor
Question from Tom: Good Afternoon, I recently purchased a Tetris cocktail cabinet (possibly re-purposed) and I was hoping to make some small adjustments to the focus and brightness on the monitor. I have read that doing any work on the monitor can be dangerous due to the capacitor holding a charge. Should I be concerned about this issue when working on these types of
adjustments? If so, what are some precautions that I can take?
I have also noticed a decent amount of burn in remains on the screen after the power has been shut off. I assume this isn’t really something one can fix, but thought it would be worth asking!
Thank you very much for your time and love the channel!

Response from Jonathan: Tom,
Yes, it is true that working on a monitor can be dangerous due to voltage issues. With that said, it is best to adjust the monitor while it is turned on so you can see what changes you are making to the picture. We discuss this process in our post on Adjusting An Arcade Monitor which we highly recommend you check out. If you are worried about getting shocked during the process, you might wear some rubber gloves while you’re making the adjustments to help prevent this from occurring.
Unfortunately there’s not much that can be done about screen burn outside of replacing the tube. The best advice we can give you is to use some dark (or smoked) plexiglass over the monitor and try turning up the brightness. This can hide the screen burn quite well depending on how bad it is on your tube.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your question and good luck with your repair.
