Arcade Question: Jamma Harness to MVS Harness
Question from Daniel: Hi, Arcade Repair Tips. I have been recently going over your youtube channel and your website and found it very helpful as I have recently purchased a Neo Geo Conversion Cab. However, I am having a problem with the audio in the cab as it sounds like it is greatly lacking in detail. I also understand that MVS boards are not 100 percent jamma compliant. So I would like to propose a question to you and hopefully giving your amazing expertise in working with arcade cabs for so long you could help me. How would a person with a converson cabinet and an MVS board make the jamma harness 100 percent MVS harness compliant? Thus potentially fixing issues like I am having with the audio. (my board is a MV-2f). Thanks for your time 🙂

You are correct that MVS boards are not 100 percent JAMMA compliant. The pinouts are slightly different between the JAMMA standard and Neo Geo MVS standard. Here’s are the links for each of the pinout configurations so you can see the differences.

You’ll notice that even though the pinouts are different, the speaker locations are the same on both. In other words, the compliance between the two sets of pinouts should not be causing the audio issues you are experiencing. You should be able to plug a Neo Geo board into a standard JAMMA harness and still have most things working (sound included).
Your sound issues are probably more related to a bad speaker or bad sound output from the board. We have seen several issues in the past where the speakers themselves have been damaged due to people sticking pens, pencils and other things into the speaker grills. A lot of times the speaker will still work even though it’s damaged but it will output some pretty bad sound quality. You might try hooking up another speaker to see if it solves your issue. Otherwise you might have to do some board repair to solve your problem.
