Arcade Repair Question

Question from Ryan: Hi, I have a CPS 2 system and the problem I’m having is that when playing the entire cabinet will suddenly lose power. Most of the time I can just flip the on/off switch a few times and it will come back on. However, I sometimes I have to smack the side of the cabinet, like a soda machine, and the power comes back on. Any ideas what might be wrong? I was thinking it might be a short or something? Thank You!

Response from Jonathan: Ryan,

From your description, it sounds like there must be either a short in some of your power supply wires or an issue with the power supply itself. This should be fairly easy to determine. The next time that the game loses power, try opening up the back and checking the power supply using a multimeter. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, check out our post on Checking And Replacing A Power Supply and that should help you out. At this point, you should find one of these 2 scenarios:

If the power supply is not putting out any voltage at this point, then you probably need to replace it. Replacement power supplies can be bought from most of the arcade parts vendors listed on our resources page under the Arcade Parts Suppliers & Distributors heading.

If the power supply is working properly but the game is not powered on, then you probably need to start checking your power wiring to see if you can find a short. The short could be either in your AC wiring (coming from the wall to the power supply) or in your DC wiring (going from your power supply to your JAMMA harness). Inspect both sets of wires visually to make sure that the wires are not frayed or damaged and that everything is making a good connection.

Try this troubleshooting process out and if you have any additional questions let us know.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repair.
