arcade repair question: buzzing audio from jamma board
Question from Victor: Hey Tim and Arcade Repair Tips staff, I found your videos online and was really impressed with how straightforward and informative they are. If it’s not too much of a bother, I’d love your advice on a question about an audio problem I’m experiencing with my CPS1 12mhz Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting machine. The trouble is this: after I plug my board into the JAMMA harness and turn on the machine, there’s a loud pulsing buzz that drowns out the game audio. The game audio is barely audible but it sounds like it’s popping and peaking beneath the constant buzzing. I’ve attached a video of what it looks and sounds like when I turn the game on.
Since the game looks and plays fine otherwise, could it just be some sort of voltage issue going to the speakers that can be adjusted? The guy who sold me the board suggested I replace the power supply but I’m not convinced that’s the problem since I do have another board (a bootleg street fighter II that came with the cabinet) that sounds and plays just fine without the buzz. I tried the Hyper Fighting board in a CPS2 machine at a store and it worked and sounded just fine so there must be something in my machine that doesn’t cooperate with this board.
Do you have any idea what could be wrong here? Perhaps there is something that is not compatible between my JAMMA harness and the Capcom board. Perhaps the power supply needs to be adjusted somehow or replaced to eliminate the buzz? Doesn’t seem like it needs to be replaced since the Peter Chou power supply I have now looks pretty new and works fine with the bootleg board. I’m confused about what to do next. Any direction you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Victor
