California Speed

Question from Cliff: Hi from Spartanburg, SC. I am restoring a California Speed and need a little help. I have recapped the monitor and checked the CRT with my Sencore beam builder and it checks Good. The game shows red writing that reads Unable to cross 2meg boundary. Also when I run the Controls Test, the steering wheel rotates right then left and screen displays Steering Wheel not responding. Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Response from Jonathan: Cliff,

This is a tough one. The Unable To Cross 2 Meg Boundary message that you are getting is definitely giving us some debugging information but it hard to pinpoint exactly where the problem lies. My guess would be that this is an issue with the video processing section of the board. You might try checking your power supply voltage and turning it up just a bit more especially if your +5 VDC is set to that exactly. Somewhere around 5.1 VDC should be good. You can also run the tests in the self test menu to see if it picks up any issues. Other than that, it’s probably a good idea to get someone who specializes in board repair to take a look. We have a list of board repair technicians on our resources page if you would like to go that route.

The controls test failure could just be an issue with some bad pots/optical sensors in your steering assembly. You might check to make sure that these parts are functioning properly. You will also need to check the motor driver assembly and board. Make sure that the fuses are good and that all wiring is connected properly. Also, check the voltage to ensure it is getting enough power to function properly.

Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repair.
