Centipede speed and video issues
Question from EJ: Hi Guys. I’m having an issue I can’t seem to find anything on the internet for. I recently restored a Centipede cabinet using an LCD monitor with hopes of eventually finding a CRT to put in the cabinet. It worked fine for several months, then started playing very fast with no video signal to my LCD. I’ve checked voltages and they all look fine. Is there a common chip on the board that controls game speed and video? Do you have any tips on where to start?
It Looks like this guy has a similar issue to mine, but he actually has video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93eKG6-Wftw. The guy has the same type of issue, but he’s using a CRT monitor. I’m assuming my monitor isn’t displaying an image because the video is part of the problem. It makes troubleshooting a little harder.
Thanks a lot! EJ

Response from Jonathan: EJ,
It’s possible that the crystal that controls the clock signal on your board is having some issues. Usually the game will not play at all if this malfunctions but there’s a possibility that you could have some speed and possibly some video issues if it was just a tad bit off . I believe that this one from Mouser would be the correct replacement part but I’m not 100% sure so make sure you double check this against the part that’s currently installed on your board. You can also check the one that’s currently installed on your board with a logic probe to make sure it is working properly.
I don’t know if you are using a video converter board to output to your LCD but if you are we highly recommend double checking it. You might try hooking up another LCD monitor to this board or connecting the LCD monitor that’s currently in your cabinet to a computer or another output device. This way you can ensure that the video output problem is indeed with your board and not with something related to your monitor.
Hope that helps. Thank you for your questions and good luck with your repair.
