Checking voltage on turtles board
Question from Andrew: I tried reading the voltage on my turtles arcade PCB and the game reset itself. It was working perfectly normal before the reset. Now, when I turn on the game, I’m just getting a blank screen with no sound. The marquee sign lights up and I can hear the monitor fan going, but no picture or sound. I changed out the power supply and I’m still getting no picture and sound. I also tried reading the volts on the PCB and it is reading nothing now with no voltage. Is there anything you can help me with? Thank you, Andrew

Response from Jonathan: Andrew,
It’s possible that you may have fried the turtles board while you were checking the voltage on the PCB. Just to be sure, you might try plugging the board into another JAMMA cabinet to test it. If the game doesn’t come up in the other cabinet, it’s gotta be an issue with the board itself. Again, static electricity and touching pins together with your multimeter probes can cause issues such as this. I’ve personally fried boards due to static discharge in the past. It’s definitely something to be aware of. Now, you could try replacing just the chip you were trying to check the voltage on to see if it solves the issue but there’s a good chance that there are other problems going on as well.
At this point, it may be worth sending the turtles board to one of the entities listed under the Board (PCB) Repair & Component Sales heading on our resources page to see if they can identify what happened with it. Of course, there will be some cost involved but it will probably be cheaper than purchasing a new board. Hope that helps.
