Donkey Kong
Question from Brett: Hi, I appreciate any help you can give me. This is the first arcade game that I have owned and my favorite.
First, I know nothing about electronics repair…nothing. I have been reading your site and a lot of other posts/forums etc. which has helped. Cap kits, etc. I have not found any q/a resembling this.
I am sending a picture of the game when it is first turned on. After 1-2 hours the “fuzzy†left side calms down to more of a moderate “quiver†on the left side of the game only. The game is very playable after it is warmed up.
This distortion was worse but I improved it by turning the H-Cent control knob on the monitor all the way to the right.
Also, there is a buzzing sound coming from the speaker and it also sounds like a buzzing coming from the back of the monitor, I have noticed the buzzing by the monitor with the back of the machine off.
Any Ideas would be helpful.
Thank you,
Brett from Montevideo, MN

Response from Jonathan: Brett,
First off, we would like to apologize for the slow reply. We were very busy over the holiday season and are just now getting around to replying to emails. Hopefully this email will still be helpful to you in resolving your issue.
As for your question, this does sound more like a bad capacitor issue. We recommend installing a tradition cap kit on the monitor to see how it effects the issue. Traditional cap kits solve many different problems on Sanyo 20EZ monitors over other brands. It’s definitely a great first step on this monitor. If the issue continues, you might need a horizontal width kit as well. Check out this article from Bob Roberts on Horizontal Width Kits for more information. Also, it could be another device causing interference such as an air conditioner but that’s a long shot at best.
We have also featured your question on episode 21 of our Q&A podcast. Unfortunately I did not list that your game was a Donkey Kong on our outline so I don’t know how helpful it will be. You can still listen to it, however, for more of our thoughts on your question. Thank you for your question and keep us updated on your progress.
